Paan is chewed mainly by Terai people, although migrants in Terai have also taken up chewing paan in recent times. Throughout Terai, paan is as common as anywhere in northern India.

Paan is served folded into a triangle or rolled, and it is spat out or swallowed after being chewed. It dates to ancient times and originated in India before becoming popular in other Asian countries.

Paan is basically a betel leaf stuffed with a betel nut, chunna and other ingredients. It is mostly consumed for its psychoactive effects, the most common variant being Meetha Paan.
