Authorities say Nicholas Hamlett killed a man in Tennessee in an attempt to steal his identity, and reported it to police as a bear attack. He was arrested in South Carolina after a weekslong manhunt.

A man called 911 along the Cherohala Skyway to say he fell. Police say he used a stolen identity to fake his own death when he killed someone else.

It was approximately 11:34 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18, when the call came in to the Monroe County E-911 Center in Tennessee. A man who called in said he fell off a cliff while being chased by a bear.
