An order issued by the Arkansas Supreme Court on Friday afternoon upended an effort by the new chief justice to fire 10 staff members.

Arkansas has a new treasurer, a new secretary of state and a slightly different lineup of Supreme Court justices as of Wednesday. John Thurston was secretary of state for six years before being elected in November into the vacant treasurer position.

Incoming Arkansas Supreme Court Chief Justice Karen Baker took her oath of office in Clinton on Wednesday. Oaths for state office are typically made in Little Rock, but Baker wanted to take her oath back where it all began for her.

Karen Baker, who chose to take the oath of office in her hometown of Clinton, became the first woman in Arkansas history to hold the position of Chief Justice.
