A man armed with an AK-47 terrorized a South Minneapolis neighborhood overnight Friday walking the streets with a weapon, firing it into his apartment building and then holing up and firing at law enforcement who were trying to take him into custody.

A man who police say sparked a standoff after firing shots from a semi-automatic weapon in a Minneapolis apartment building has been charged. Nathan Mellstrom Matz, 39, was charged Thursday by the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office with three counts of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon.

After working to evacuate the building, officers allegedly made contact with Matz in a stairwell, where he was armed with a machine gun.
