Leaders across the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia region, as well as federal lawmakers, are reacting to the tragic American Airlines plane crash near DCA.

The flight appeared to collide with a helicopter just before it was scheduled to land. This is a developing story and will be updated.

Officials are yet to confirm the number of casualties from the accident, but reports say first responders have recovered several bodies from the Potomac River.

The collision involved a Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet operated by PSA Airlines and a military Black Hawk helicopter.
