Japan's core consumer price inflation likely accelerated in January from the previous month and rose at the joint-fastest pace in 17 months due to high food prices and reduced energy subsidy, a Reuters poll showed on Friday.

The index that tracks food was up 4 percent, led in part by a 6.6 percent increase in the category that includes meats, poultry, fish and eggs. Egg prices across the country are skyrocketing because of a bird flu outbreak. Nationally, egg prices jumped 15 percent from December to January.

Food and gasoline prices are rising again as US inflation picked up broadly at the start of the year, with economists warning President Donald Trump’s tariffs against China, on steel imports and potentially against huge trading partners Canada and Mexico will only accelerate the trend.
