U.S. consumer prices rose by more than expected in January, driven by a sharp increase in egg prices amid an outbreak of bird flu, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Wednesday.

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers increased 0.5% on a seasonally adjusted basis in January, after rising 0.4% in December, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.

U.S. consumer prices increased more than expected in January, reinforcing the Federal Reserve's message that it was in no rush to resume cutting interest rates amid growing uncertainty over the economy.
