Several cold weather shelters are opening their doors this week in Escambia County as a cold weather advisory is in effect. The National Weather Service of Mobile issued a cold weather advisory to begin Monday night through mid-morning on Tuesday.

Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas and Sarasota counties are opening their cold weather shelters on Monday and Tuesday.

Cold weather shelters will open again in Volusia County this week as temperatures drop. Community organizations will help people find shelter in the evenings from Monday through Wednesday. "These shelters serve as a refuge for individuals without adequate home heating or housing," according to a news release from the Volusia County government.

A Cold Weather Advisory is currently in effect through Tuesday. The forecast includes wind chills as low as 16-20 degrees.

Overnight temperatures are expected to plummet in the coming days. In anticipation of the expected cold spell, Beaufort County announced the opening of two cold-weather shelters.

Volusia will open a shelter Monday through Wednesday, too. Temperatures are expected to dive into the mid-30s.

Mayor Lumumba and his staff didn’t waste any time putting together a plan to stay ahead of the cold weather. During his weekly news conference, he announced that as of 2:30 Monday afternoon, the Shepherd’s Gym is open to anyone in need of a warm place to stay. It’s located at 1355 Hattiesburg Street near Jim Hill High School.
