Such a great ski resort and all is great. You can spend 4 days for skiing and enjoy the speed and scenery passing by you when skiing. After the daily ski, in the evening you can enjoy the hot spring … Full review by oftheplanet

Hello, may I know if it is possible to just take the ropeway to see the snow monster & stroll around surroundings without having to play Skii nor Snowboarding? Need any info for those who have been there before. Thank you.

Hi Sheila, if you want to ski then it is unlikely to be possible. Hit and miss as to snow at that time of year down to resort level. At higher elevations we had snow from the 1st November last year (photo in our FB Pension Brown posts - can't give you a link on Trip Advisor) if it's is scenes/photography that you are after. The chairlifts generally do not start to open until at least the 2nd week - areas opening will obviously depend upon snow cover. The Ropeways are open all year.

Hello, we are trying to decide where to take our kids skiing around 8 January for 3-4 nights. We can either go to Zao Onsen or Myoko/Kogen Suginohara. What would you recommend for complete package i.e. in terms of value, ski slopes (we are intermediate/beginner but do not require lessons), accommodation options; transport into and out of the area, restaurants and other attractions (e.g. foxes or snow monkeys). I understand Suginohara gives free lift passess to kids under 12? Thanks

I didn't travel with kids so can't comment on that aspect. We went to Myoko in 2012 when very few English speaking tourists were around but I believe that has changed since. We visited Zao this year and it is still very Japanese. We like traditional accommodation as far as possible but often it is more expensive. We stayed in Akakura at Myoko. It was a 40 minute, free, shuttle bus to Suginohara which was interesting the first time but a bit dreary after the second day. Suginohara definitely had wide easy slopes for intermediate and beginners. (We are advanced intermediate but certainly enjoyed it.) Down side to Myoko was that, at the time, we had difficulty finding places to eat at night that were not smoking. Eating early was the only way to avoid the smoke filled restaurants. At week-ends it was very, very crowded, so much so that we felt it was dangerous and left the slopes very early on the Saturday. Mid-week was beautifully quiet. To get to the different areas was the long shuttle bus ride, from Akakura (more beginner slopes) to Akakuro Kanko to Suginohara. Zao did not seem to have the same influx of week-end skiers so that was a plus. There were a number of interesting restaurants in Zao and they seemed to all be non smoking. The slopes at Zao are mostly intermediate. We had some expert skiers amongst us who found it a bit too easy going but we were happy. Zao is fairly small but it has more of a traditional village atmosphere about it. Zao slopes can be accessed without a shuttle bus by catching the different lifts or gondolas. We stayed almost at the base of one of the gondolas at Hotel Lucent Takamiya just below the Zao Ropeway. I'm not aware of any ski foxing at either resort. The snow monkeys seem to be closer to Shiga Kogen area. Zao is noted for its strong sulphur baths which were fabulous. My preference is Zao but that is because it suited our requirements for adults and adult 'kids'.
